Thebaid -- [thee'-bey-id] The "Thebaid" or Thebais (Greek: Θηβαΐς or Θηβαΐδα) is the region of ancient Egypt containing the thirteen southernmost nomes of Upper Egypt, from Abydos to Aswan. From the fourth century A.D.,it was the home of thousands of monks and nuns who made the desert a city peopled with Christians striving toward heaven in the angelic way of life.
