Thebaid -- [thee'-bey-id] The "Thebaid" or Thebais (Greek: Θηβαΐς or Θηβαΐδα) is the region of ancient Egypt containing the thirteen southernmost nomes of Upper Egypt, from Abydos to Aswan. From the fourth century A.D.,it was the home of thousands of monks and nuns who made the desert a city peopled with Christians striving toward heaven in the angelic way of life. I like this one because it raises the question of whether or not one is required to remain among temptations that are patently too great for them.
Yep. I often feel that way about where I work. I have great respect for spiritual men who thrive in an environment like this. Most days I am just surviving.
